Letter to Residents

ANNUAL CONTRIBUTION LETTER TO LAKE RESIDENTS (MAY, 2025)
Dear Fellow Mona Lake Resident:
The Mona Lake Improvement Association continues its commitment to maintain Mona Lake and its channel. Without the generous financial support of our fellow Mona Lake residents, the City of Norton Shores, Maranatha, and The Mona Lake Boat Club, this work could not be completed.
We continue to work with PLM, our weed contractor, to identify areas that need to be sprayed for weed control. We budget approximately $20,000 annually for weed control. A listing of the tentative treatment schedule, possible chemicals and appropriate restrictions is on the reverse side of this letter. In addition, snow fences were again installed near the mouth of the channel to minimize the amount of sand that blows into the channel through the winter.
Significant dredging is necessary this year to keep the channel navigable. We were able to successfully receive a 30-day extension (through the end of May) from EGLE to complete the work, and we have contracted with a dredging company. The cost is $80,000. Given that we have spent over $220,000 in the past six years on dredging, we are currently behind in our sinking fund for dredging so we need your financial support.
While we appreciate the 40% of our lake residents who contribute to your MLIA, we need everyone’s support due to the anticipated dredging resulting from low water levels and the fact that we were able to forgo dredging last year. Our goal this year is to increase our percentage of lake owners who donate to at least 75%, but we need your help to reach that goal. While the average donation received was approximately $450, every bit helps and we encourage a minimum donation of $250 or greater. If you have previously contributed, thank you. If you have not contributed, we ask you to support our efforts by donating so that we can continue to enjoy our beautiful Mona Lake and channel. For your convenience, a self-addressed envelope is enclosed. We are a 501-c-3 tax-exempt entity.
Sincerely,
The Mona Lake Improvement Association Board
